Sitting on my porch Rain coming down to give life to all of us Do we all feel it? What are the children doing in their cages? Have they seen the rain? Felt its life-giving force? I sit in the comfort of my porch, sheltered from the rain as mothers and babies flee gangs and forge through harrowing roads, rivers, and dark places with no promise of safety, just hope. I sit here on my sheltered porch without fear of losing my life while girls continue to go missing on the west side and found dead in vacant buildings. I sit on my porch with all the privilege of the world and the dark clouds passing over my head as my baby sleeps in his bed. I know where my baby is. Do you? Do all the mamas and daddy’s know? No. Stop it. Stop it now. Stop the killings. Stop the detentions. Free all people. Open all borders. Will we forget as this storm passes? And then the sun comes back and we look at our brightly lit rectangles and forget about the children locked in cages who face a storm every day.
